According to Bluehost, refunds take about five (5) to seven (7) business days to display in your card balance or card balance. Check refunds might take anywhere from ten (10) to fourteen (14) business days, depending on the circumstances.

Cancelling the Bluehost Sub: Our Experience

We signed up for Bluehost with one goal in mind—to test their 30-day money-back guarantee.  The idea was to see how simple (or complicated) the refund process would be for a normal user. Therefore, we bought a hosting plan, created an account and waited. After 20 days, it was time to cancel and find out how well the refund process went.

Initiating the Refund Request: On day 20, we went to our Bluehost account and went to the support section. We had to start a chat with a support agent instead of having a direct “Cancel & Refund” button. It wasn’t too bad, although it took about 10 minutes to get to the front to go in.

Soon after connecting, we were nice and told them that we wanted to cancel and have our money back. So the agent first asked for a reason—performance issues, pricing concerns or a move to another host. We were simple and said we found something better suited to our needs.

The Retention Tactics: The agent, as expected, didn’t process the refund immediately. What they did instead was to offer us alternative solutions, i.e. discounted plans, free upgrades or even a support session if we faced any kind of technical issues. We stated that we had already made up our minds and declined.

Refund Approval and Processing: After a couple of minutes of back and forth, the agent finally approved the refund. Nevertheless, they clarified a couple of things:

• The refund amount was not refundable because we had registered a domain when we signed up, and it took about $15 from the refund amount.
• The amount could be refunded back to the original payment method in 10 business days. They were promised that the amount would be credited back to where it came from.

Final Outcome: We got an email confirmation of the cancellation two days later. The refund hit our bank account in about five business days, faster than expected.

Final Thoughts: The process wasn’t difficult, but Bluehost tried to keep us as they offered. Be firm and prepared to make some headway on the back and forth. If you did register a domain, you also have to take into account that part of the cost will be taken away. 

In general, the refund experience was reasonable, and we recovered most of our money without a lot of trouble.
